It's The Economy
As we have been watching during the past twelve months, the economy has been wretching to a halt. Donors resources have shrinked or, in some cases, disappeared. Businesses are laying off staff and cutting expenses where they can. Nonprofits are cutting where they can...no matter what size they are.
Reducing expenses may mean letting staff go, making staff pay a greater share of their health insurance, or forcing staff to reduce their working days by 10%. The latter serves to reduce staff salaries while forcing them to take additional vacation days without pay.
In the twenty first century climate of increasing numbers of nonprofit organizations in the United States (approximately 1.4 million), the current recession may slow the rate down to a trickle. This is a good time to look for volunteers, especially from the newly unemployed.
